Later, the highway leaves the Ping River and starts to parallel the Myanmar border before turning towards Chiang Rai. Nestled along this stretch of road, Wat Tha Ton sits up on a hill with an impressive view across the border and the valleys around. The temple itself is host to a huge collection of statues of Buddha, styles collected from all over the Buddhist world including a set, minimally styled, that appear to be carved from black basalt.
